Karen Black, the star of Easy Rider, has passed away at the age of 74.  Black, who died last Thursday, has been battling with cancer for a long time.  Her death was revealed by her husband Stephen Eckelberry on Facebook.  He announced, “It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago. Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me.”

In November 2010, the Oscar-nominated actress Black was diagnosed with ampullary cancer.  She also underwent a surgery for the removal of her pancreas.  In 2011, she was cancer-free.  Last March, there was a fundraising page established in order to obtain public donations intended for the experimental treatment which will be done in Europe.

On Aug. 7, a day before Karen died, her husband posted a message saying that Black will not be able to go to Europe because she had been bed-bound.  The disease had spread towards her back and spine.   Eckelberry said he had “given up predicting what is going to happen to Karen.”

He further added, “You look at the scans, they tell you one thing, then you meet Karen, and what you are left with is how amazingly alive she is.  She can’t help but take life head-on and be completely engaged in the moment, always interested, always curious, always present.”

Condolence to the family of Karen Black!
